So judging by the comments, have most of you never bought a new vehicle? Or have, but regretted it?

I am stuck between the want and need comment. In all practicality, I could probably get by with a gasser. Im sure the increased fuel and maintenance cost would offset the reduced fuel mileage. These new 17s run like a scalded dog, which I'm not going to lie gets my "motor" going lol. Plus, I feel like Im getting a decent deal with a new diesel that I will likely put at least 200k for $42K.

Without diving too deep into finances, my wife and I are currently putting 35% of our income in savings. I have a raise coming in a month and a half that I hope will come close to covering this extra monthly payment. Our house payment goes down $200/month in a year once our escrow is caught up. I dont think Im so worried about the truck payment putting us in a bind as I am losing some of that 35% freedom.

It's a tough road being as fiscally responsible as possible, yet enjoying life while you have it. At almost 32, I've never driven a new vehicle off the lot, so I think that has something to do with me considering this. Randy I get what you're saying about investing it. My question; did you always get by with the cheapest vehicle possible or did you ever spend more for comfort and reliability? Thats basically where Im at right now.

I have bought new vehicles ever since I have been in a position to afford then when I was ~25 years old, and I hold them for anywhere from 5-12 years. If you have the itch, and can afford it, scratch that itch! Nothing wrong with that.

I got the impression you were trying hard to make the most economical and financially sound decision. Certainly nothing wrong with that!

Don't beat yourself up over this. It sounds like you have made good financial decisions in the past, so reward yourself and buy what you want. Don't worry...be happy!

Sounds to me like your in a good enough place to make the purchase you want. That being said I’m a firm believer in if you ask for advice/validation for a decision you already know the answer.

How can that be true if he is talking about financing a truck? .

A good enough place would be if he was paying cash.

The best option is an older diesel that you just use for the cattle biz.

Keep driving your commuter car if you can.

Your first option was the best one, but new car-itis is highly contagious.

You're probably 100% correct with this, all the way around lol.

Do you REALLY need a 42,000$ truck to haul cows??

Sounds like you are trying to keep up with the Jones... or Smiths... or whomever.

This. Dude. Buy a mint loaded 7.3 Powerstroke for 12k or less and keep your money!

Or a square body diesel chevy.

I went through all this a few years ago. Decided to save my money, buy a mint low miles Tahoe. And have now built it into an army tank of a hunting rig thats ready for anything. And no note.

Yep! If I can't pay cash (even if I do end up financing it) I don't need it!

I bought my last truck 15 years ago. That is what paying monthly payments is about. Not everyone pays cash. Now I could've bought 2-3 used trucks in that time.

Do what feels right for you.

The last 5 or so posts are pretty sobering, and really show the difference in mentality people have. Over the last few years my way of looking at finances has been morphing. My whole life has been trying to get by, borrow against my future earnings, to get by today. Then I see the fallacy in that. How hard it is to break free of that once you are in it. And I truly believe it is designed to be that way. To keep us in debt ( by our own will and desire to have something before we have earned it ). But if you owe, are you free? It seems we enslave ourselves to others when we borrow.

Anyway, got a little off topic but....

My wife and I are 34. We bought my wife’s 4 Runner new, but it’s now 4 years old and only has 32K on it. We will easily have it for 10+ years. She had her previous explorer for close to 12 years. The 4 runner is going to be paid off shortly, so I’m good with that. For my vehicle I have always been a buy used person. Could afford new, but I would rather put the difference in payments towards other things.

                          That is a sweet ride.

I've somehow recently justified myself into needing a 4WD suburban for work.

Funny how it is so rare to hear these days.

The power your income has (when it isn't burdened by debt) is truly amazing.

I like nice stuff as much as the next guy, maybe even a little more ....but it starts to feel really good when you know that you are saving for you and your family's future and can start to see real progress.

That does not sound like any fun.
