I won't disagree, but boards allow you to take the game anywhere. And as mentioned boards are more difficult.

This is how we did it when I was a kid. My BIL asked me a couple months ago if I wanted to play. They pulled out some boxes that looked like we were gonna play putt putt. The surface was better than I remembered the dirt being though.
