Everything is a river....unless its a lake , in which case its a pond.. or a tank.

Creeks are usually not as long as rivers and usually drain into rivers, shallow in nature and are dictated mostly by runoff.. A river can span states or even a whole nation or country, may be thousands of miles long. Rivers also drain into seas, lakes and oceans.

When in doubt, defer to whatever that drainage is called on the topographic maps. Somebody else already named them, why split hairs. There is obviously no consistency, at least in Texas.

Just wanted some super brain TBH inputs! Just like everything I’ve looked up there is no ryme or reason except regional dialects on what’s called what or why.

A bayou runs through a swamp. A stream is narrow and runs through a mountain valley. A brook is a creek that runs through Yankeeville, I guess??

Most of Texas has rivers and creeks. Creeks are small, narrow draws of running water that may or may not be seasonal in flow. Rivers are larger and have year round water.

At least that's the way I think about it.
Yep lol that's pretty much it.

I don't know about the river and creek thing but I have researched the difference in a Pond, Tank, or Lake. A Tank is something you have to crawl over a barbwire fence to fish or skinny dip in. a Pond is any body of water on your buddies ranch while a Lake is any body of water on yours.

Up here creeks are called "cricks" . We have nice streams up in the mountains.

This thread has connected neighbors not cricks, rivers or streams.
