    Kayak insurance...?

Is there an insurance company or policy type that covers your kayak when it's on a roof rack? I'm talking vehicle insurance, not an extension of your home owner's policy.

I have my car and house insurance thru USAA and they told me it wasn't something they offered.

If you are talking about it flying off and hitting another car, then your liability would pay for the damages to the other car, not the kayak.

No...I'm talking about being able to replace a kayak if it falls off. Or a bike or even the contents of a turtle shell/carrier if it were on top of a car rack.

Google personal article policy. I know State Farm offers (not recommending them just used to work there). I know it covers sporting equipment so I don't know why a kayak would not be covered but not positive. If I remember correctly you have item appraised or provide receipts for purchase amount. They will insure for that amount minus deductible. Hope that helps.

I believe an adjuster could easily deny such a claim ( kayak falling off) due to negligence to secure properly.

I'm no expert but I don't see how that would be different them covering your damages in an at fault auto accident. Wouldn't that be negligence to safely operate your vehicle?

What if you called your insurance agent? I bet he’d know.

Thats a good question and makes sense but i would think that operating a vehicle is different in the eyes of insurance companies because nearly everyone has to operate a vehicle and insurance is mandated by the gov. so it is very difficult to deny a claim on an at fault auto accident. That said many auto claims are denied. I would think an auto claims adjuster could very easily deny a claim if you intentionally drove into a stock pond to test your 4wd and it flooded. Or intentionally tied it to a tree stump and tore up the truck trying to yank it out of the ground.

If you took the time to read I wouldn't have to respond to this. I mentioned that USAA told me that they didn't offer any coverage other than extended home owner's policy which isn't what I'm looking for.

That being said. I know that we have a plethora of people on here who either know or have experienced most things under that sun. Which is why I reached out to the extended family for their thoughts. You comment is like hearing from the smart ***** cousin who just likes to hear himself speak adding no real value to the conversation. But hey...thanks anyway for trying.

I didn't realize that carrying things on top of the car was a gap in my coverage. I carry bikes, kayaks and or roof basket loaded with stuff. The wife and I are very active outdoors and just two bikes would be a significant loss if the worst were to happen.

                      Oh crap. Guilty. Lol!

Possible they’d know an alternative though.

I’m no help on a solution, but am interested in the answer as well. Are you only looking for the time that the kayak/etc is on top of the car? Or do you also want coverage if you float over something and gouge a hole in the bottom?

You may be right. I just see it as negligence is the reason we need insurance. I've been to the ER a couple of times because I was negligent in what I was doing and my health insurance paid every time. Again, you could be right on this particular circumstance and I'm not trying to argue. Just sharing my opinion.
