    LEO investigation help

I'm working a string of burglaries in my local jurisdiction and the same suspects have burglarized several businesses in the neighboring cities. I was able to obtain a photograph of the vehicle, but can't make out the plate.

I know we have a lot of leos on here and was going to see if I could send the photograph to someone to try to clear up the picture to get a lp. I work at a small agency and it is not in the budget to send the photograph to a forensic analyst to attempt to clear it enough for a tag, especially for it only being a property crime, albeit 4 state jail felonies (in just my city).

    Thanks in advance.

I can't help but kudos to you for going to extra lengths to do a thorough job. The community you serve is dang lucky to have you.

Have you tried surrounding business/homes as they tend to have different angles that might possibly get you a better peep at the plate? We have a tech guy but his abilities are much better in his own mind if you get my drift. I have heard of some agencies tracking a vehicle on cameras for nearly 50 miles to get a plate. Best of luck in your efforts. Maybe the cold case guru himself will come by and lend some experience.

Put it out on Facebook. Someone will recognize it, cleared many of our BMV cases.

          I sincerely appreciate that.

Tried. The pic I have came from a different state.. I've outreached to several agencies further out, but dry so far.

That's my next move. Was hoping to obtain warrants and arrest the dirtbags before going on social media. I'm sure they'll pop smoke and deuce out when they hear it's public.

Its been my experience that “clearing” up photos enough to read a tag is pretty rare. Most surveillance cameras just don’t give you a good enough image to do it. Do you have the actual video or still image from the camera or is it a picture of a picture thing? Even though you’re a small agency, reach out to your local Ranger who can help you with the DPS labs. When I worked burglaries I often worked with some ATF agents who have acess to great tools and analyst as well. DPS labs are usually free and most other agencies will assist if they have the right tools and you ask nicely. Just my experience. My agency isn’t “big” (60ish sworn), so networking helps a lot. Where are you located? Also, if you can get a partial the Auto theft task force guys for your area can usually help with how many vehicles in a general area have that partial or even how many registered vehicles there are of a certain model in a county.

Our local ranger has offered to help in any way he can, I just haven't had time to contact him. I just got the photo yesterday.

It's a still shot from a video. I'm working for Valley View.

Is there a toll road nearby? Likely to have taken the toll road out of the area. See if they are willing to assist, likely won't but it won't hurt to ask. If it's late at night when the burglaries occurred you could hone in on a target time for LP scans.

nearest toll is 40+ miles away

Start searching a 50 mile then out to 100 mile radius on craigslist, offer up, Facebook market place, etc.. if any of the items stolen are unique you might get lucky with a search. I have in the past.

Most of the burglaries here happen with stolen vehicles. Good luck.
