I can absolutely see a couple guys out there who draw because they've heard of the H and big deer go out and do something stupid and cause backlash from all the birdwatchers and antis that frequent the refuge. I would argue that the chances of that happening are much higher with a draw pool composed of anyone with a license as opposed to only the guys who care enough to take a course and send in a paper app and go shoot a proficiency test.
This isn't to say only the guys who have BH ed are legit bowhunters, or that everyone with BH ed is a legit bowhunter, or that you aren't a legit bowhunter without hunters ed. I'm sure there are a ton of guys who can out shoot and out hunt me that don't have BH ed for a number of reasons.
It just means it limits the pool to those who are obviously committed to the activity because they sought out and took a course for the sole reason of hunting a great place.
It basically boils down to the guys who take the course and shoot the proficiency course have obviously shown they care enough about this incredible hunt to put in the effort.

T-Roy, there are instructors located statewide that can conduct a BH ed course, they just aren't as active as the group in North Texas. Contact your regional Hunter Ed Specialist, contacts are located on the TPWD website under Education, Contact us.
The proficiency test can be a local archery tourney, just take the hunt announcement to the range officer and show him or her how you need it documented. Easy.
As far as the classroom/ field day portions, one in Dallas this Saturday 24 March, one in Fort Worth Saturday 19 May. Note, none currently planned the remainder of the year, at least at this time.
A dedicated Hagerman qualifier tentatively scheduled in Fort Worth, Saturday 23 June.

If they want to achieve their goals, they'd stick with the program, of experienced bow hunters, whom put form the efforts, take the time to accomplish the requirements to apply and put forth a steadfast amount of time to harvest the game). This isn't about what's legitimate and justifiable, its about dollars. Its about, how can we make more money?
As a never applied and never hunted, first time caller , first time applicant....I already foresee where this is going and I wholeheartedly feel for the guys whom have been associated and long looking forward to their chance at the H. I experienced what it was like with the previous crowd of long timers at LANWR, and empathize with them just after 2 years of it going to the drawn system. I was fortunate to be drawn on the first two years of the drawn system, but am confident, that run of success in being drawn has come to a very real and unlikely future of hunting there again.Originally posted by JustinJ View PostI think you missed the part where i said having BH ed doesn't automatically make you a better hunter/archer and that not having the class means you aren't a good hunter/archer
It just means the casual guys who don't care enough to take a course or shoot the qualifier are excluded. And that makes the hunt better for a variety of reasons I've already mentioned.
And, generally speaking, a doctor with a diploma from ANYWHERE is GENERALLY better than a doctor without one
I know others who are die hard bow hunters, here, out of state and around the world who have it but would never consider applying for H.
Heck most of the bowhunters I know don't even get on hunting forums.
The "ruining" of draw hunting is the fact that just the sheer numbers of people moving here has increased and demand for places to hunt with that. It's the same thing that drives lease prices up and it won't ever get better. As pointed out social media and on line information makes it easy for anyone to see it, apply and get the course regardless.

Im not sure I see it as a money grab from the TPWD, they don't supersede a federally regulated NWR. If it was the NWR wanting more money, just increase the app. fee, hunt fee. They've battled with the draw system over the years, maybe they thought it would make it better for them. But for those that think it will be better and give them a chance to hunt there, you obviously don't apply for the TPWD public draw hunts. It can take many, many years (with pref. points) to get drawn. The more popular a place, the worse the odds. Hagerman with its reputation will be one of those places. If the state becomes the regulatory factor, you will see a different hunting procedure, i.e. hunt numbers, game allotments, etc. They want more hunters, more opportunities and can't get that if it's not appeasing to the hunter.

I don't see why guys on this thread saying that they will now apply haven't applied in the past. What was holding you back before this change?
I wish when I was younger I would have known about the H and applied. I didn't really start applying until about 4 years ago and I believe I have enough points this year to get my chance to hunt there. But it may be my last.
The past few years I have had a big group of guys set for the hog hunt and Gayle always made it super easy for us. Only 1 year did we not get our whole group drawn. This year we had 14 guys in camp with 4 of them being kids. It was a great time! I don't see that happening any longer with TPWD involved.
Thank goodness I have done nothing but public land hunt for years and now I will be a land owner by this coming deer season.
