If I were you I’d give it to the local police department. Since we do not know what it is but you say it’s something of value, chances are it may have been reported lost or stolen. If the owner had a serial number and reported it and in the future you get stopped with it, you may or may not get in trouble. It maybe the missing piece of a crime known one knows.
