Another vote for Nissan Altima. It drives great, is a good size and I average 34mpg.

I've been looking at VW jetta with the TDI Diesel. Looks like 40-50 mpg is pretty easy to get.

Look into a KIA. They all come with a 60K bumper to bumper and 100K power train warranty. No matter if you buy one used from a dealer or other seller, KIA honors the warranty. What’s even better is you can purchase an additional 40K bumper to bumper warranty from a KIA dealership, so long as you do it by 59,999.9 miles.

Their resale value is low, but they are very well made cars. We’ve had a KIA Optima and now a Sportage. Both great cars. I’d stay away from anything made by VW. Our new Beetle and Passat were both crap, and the dealer service department at Clear Lake VW is HORRIBLE. My wife’s next new car will be another Sportage or maybe a Sorento.

          Personally I drive a 2001 F-250 PS, a 2017 F-150 5.0 liter, and a 2015 Harley Road Glide.

Honda civic, Honda accord, used Lexus is250, scion tc, any of those. I got a 09 scion tc for a commuter vehicle in 08. Still have it and it's literally never given me any problems. Just had to buy new tires gas and oil. It's been awesome.

My dad put 450,000 miles on his last 2006 Toyota Camry and has 200,000 on his current 2014.

I had one. Great cars but higher sticker price, fuel cost and maintenance. Water and fuel pumps must be replaced around 100,000 miles. So it will end up costing you substantially more in the long run.

                        Currently looking at:

                        VW Jetta
                        Nissan Versa Base
                        Toyota Corolla
Ford Fusion and a few others.

If this has been asked please forgive me. I did the search, but nothing came up.
Getcha a Mazda 3. We have owned 4 of them. The first was actually a Protege (before that became the Mazda 3) and had it for 7 years and put about 175k on it. The next one was a 2006 which I bought used for a commuter car. My teenage boys that are truck lovers didn't even mind driving it to save some cash. The 2006 got killed by a deer. Replaced it with a 2007 which got killed by one of my boys. Replaced it with a 2008 and gave it to my daughter-in-law. By one used with under 75k miles for $6-$7k and you will be set.

I have had 5 Honda accords(LX) since 1996. I have only had 1 repair in 22 years. It was an ac line with a leak. Cost me a little over 200 bucks. I am planning on getting a 2018 with the new turbo engine as soon as they lower the interest .

                              Buy American!
I’ve been working on cars for 15 years and every time an American car shows up in my stall it makes my head hurt. Poorly engineered, poorly built, and just not the same quality as a Toyota. And I’m pretty sure Toyota is more American than most American vehicles.

Bought a 1998 Ford Escort ZX2 and put 250K miles on it, gave to oldest grand-daughter. She drove it for 2 years and added another 50K and then gave to her brother. Now has 350K and still going great.

I replaced it with a 2010 Toyota Corolla and it has 180K on it now, and is an even better commuter than the other one. I don't think you could beat a Corolla, Civic, or Versa.
