If you have the DVD, watch the special features. Turns out Costner was suffering from a ruptured spleen and had to have surgery to continue with the movie. Duval was thrown from his horse and broke 6 ribs while practicing for a riding scene, and they built the town for 1 million dollars in a remote part of Alberta Canada. They even paid 40K to have a road built to access the property.
