    How soon to purge crawfish??

    Cooking a sack this evening?

I’d like to purge them this round as last time I boiled them I didn’t.

How early should I start purging?

    Salt or no salt?

We usually purge the night before

Earlier the better. I used salt and was happy how it came out.

There was a great thread on here a few years ago about purging and cooking. It'd be worth your time to try and find it. It was a lot of good info.

Purging does nothing. Just keep washing and draining the water off until it drains off clean.

That pretty much what I remember the above-mentioned thread said as well.

What you are referring to is really a wash and not a true purge whereby the intestinal track is evacuated. This will have no noticeable effect on gut contents, but a wash is usually beneficial in cleaning up the exoskeleton. Salt serves no purpose and does not make a difference. I would recommend washing just before cooking, and leave the crawfish in the sack on ice or in cool damp place until then.

X2 This is 100% correct. Wash and clean, keep draining water. All the salt does is KILL them.

Ok that’s all I did - washed about four times. Water is clean.

I just bathe them until water is clean. I’ve been to boils where they had boiled them straight out the sack. Nasty.

Chlorine kills them also. I caught them as a kid and tried to keep them as pets. I learned the hard way. Lol
