Construction site scrap lumber

With all the neighborhoods popping up around Austin I've wondered about the legality of taking the scrap lumber in the plywood bins that the contractor makes to throw trash in. I would like to grab some but I'm unsure if I am allowed. I can't ask anyone around the site as I don't speak Spanish. Anyone know if this is legal??

Yeah, just ask. I've always been told I can have what is in the plywood boxes they build to toss stuff in, but BE SURE to ask first. There is a lot of theft that goes on around new construction, you don't want to be caught up in a misunderstanding over free lumber!

Stop by construction site trailer and ask.

You'd be very wise to gain specific permission from the construction manager on site. NOT, some framer or concrete guy, or whomever. Depending on the builder, it can be a big deal. Be sure to get name and phone number, etc. of the person that gives you permission.

Unless it's in the dumpster or trash pile, I'd leave it alone. Even @ that I'm sure it's technically theft unless you have permission from the builder to remove it.

Yes but it’s important to say this as you are grabbing the scrap-wood and making good eye contact. Otherwise it’s seen as disrespectful.

My son had to put a stop to it. Had a couple situations where guys mistook 16' 2x6 for scrap.
