    Leer Camper Top and MPG

I am in the market for a 2014 or 2015 Chevy/GMC 4x4 Crew and want to put a Leer type cab high topper on it. I was wondering if anyone has any real life experience in MPG loss after they put on the topper. For every loss of 1 MPG it will cost about $150 year, just trying to get a feel of the cost to own a topper vs a hard cover.

    Thanks

By the time you are old enough to put a Grandpa hat on your truck, you should be retired and not having to drive to work, accelerating slower, braking more gently, and generally just taking trips to see the doctor and play bingo, so the mileage shouldn't really be an issue.

My buddy that has one says he gets a little bit better mileage, but his topper is smooth on top.
I give him hell about that thing, but I secretly kinda like it.

I loved my topper on my super duty but I can’t say whether it helped or hurt because I drove straight to the installer and had it put on.

I suspect it hurt more than helped.

Myth busters did some tests a while back and said their was mileage loss by running with the tailgate down.

Might not be the exact same situation but I had a hightop (about a foot higher than the top of the cab) on an extended cab 86 Toyota pickup and the MPG went up with that thing off of there. To be honest though I liked it so much that it was rarely off the truck. I've got a 96 F350 on the way with a "grandpa hat" on it headed this way and doubt that it'll cause the MPG to go down enough that I'd ever take it off.

I've had 2 trucks that had camper tops on them. I drove with and without periodically and never noticed a difference. One was an 05 Z71 extended cab, ant the other an 07 Z71 crew cab.

I got better mileage on my old 05 Dodge, however, it wasn’t much. Keeping the snow out of the bed when I lived in WI made me not worry about it. My current Taco doesn’t have one, and being the first truck I have owned without one, it will be the last time I go without one.

I put one on an f-150 and didn't notice a change in mpg at all. Biggest for me was speed would have more of an effect than anything. If your really worried about it, leave the house 30min earlier and drive 5mph slower than you would've before.

Put one on my Taco & didn't make enough difference to really tell.

I have a Leer on my 2002 F250 and I would suggest you don't get one with sliding windows at all. Mine all leak water. For that matter I am not impressed with my Leer over its life span. Oh and if your weed eater throw a pebble and shatters your back window on that Leer you will need $575 to replace it from Leer, just an FYI.

I personally wouldn't buy a truck if I wanted that. SUV or minivan is your best option

                        Leer Camper Top and MPG

I have put toppers on most of my trucks and never noticed a difference one way or the other on mileage. No better option for traveling IMO and I am currently searching for a used one for my new Tundra.

As a side note, just know that Chevy and GMC toppers are not always interchangeable. Especially on 2500 and 3500. The beds are quite different at the back.

I like the grandpa hat! I think it increases your truck utility for hunting a ton. Been looking for a good used one.

I don't notice a difference in MPG with mine on, but I drive a Tundra and the MPG suck already. I really like it though, its more handy than a pocket on a shirt. Nice hauling all of your gear to the farm in the rain and not worrying about everything getting soaked.

                              That's the truth.

I have a 2012 F250 6.7. Put an XQ100 on mine right after Christmas, no noticeable change in MPG. But I don't keep track either. It's a truck who cares. I will say, having the topper has increased the bed usage significantly. Now all my wet and muddy crap goes back there. Cab is freed up for better stuff.

Best purchase you can make for a truck, awesome for camping. I installed two 40" LED strips inside (Not a light bar), and it lights up like my house at night now.
