I haven't spent a ton of time learning my Iphone. I use it to surf the net when I want to or need to. I check my email from the phone, use some of the apps that I have downloaded. I have a bunch of pictures on it as well as music that I either listen to thru the earphones or thru the stereo in my truck. One of the knocks that I hear is that you can't send a picture via a text message...not something I do anyway. Also there is no flash player compatability. This will cause you a problem with some web sites etc. As a phone it works great for me...no problems there.
Keep a charger in your car, at the lease, at the house as battery life is not good. If you turn off the wi-fi, don't push email ( I do it manually), turn off location service etc, the battery will last longer. I just turn on features when I want to use them and I check my email manually rather than have it automatically pushed to my phone. I have found that doing all this extends the battery life.
I really like my iPhone. I'm a bit of a geek, ok a hopeless geek, and I've had fun with everything it does. I've got movies for when I get bored, music to listen to around work, a solid web browser that does everything I need, good email clients, more games than I ever even want to try, and a decent phone. I love the voicemail system on iPhone. Sometimes the lack of pic messaging is frustrating when friends try to send them to me, but thats probably my only real hangup. They can eat up the battery, but the tips above will stretch it out if you need to.

I love mine. it does all the things I need a smart phone to do, but I am far from a tech guy. Emails, surfing, music are my main needs. The only thing, very minor, that irritates me is that when I am in the shop, on the tractor, hunting, or if its just cold and I have gloves on - you have to take a glove off to use the phone. The screen is heat activated or something.
If you travel outside the country and you buy a smartphone that does not have Wifi capability, such at the Blackberry Strorm, you being paying a ton for any Web access.
Even with an international plan, data transfer rates ($$$) are expensive. Fortunately, the iphone is Wifi capable and when we were recently in Mexico hunting at a lodge with Internet access and a router, we could surf the Web for free on our Iphones.
