    Tape worms in hogs?

Did anyone else read about Tape worms in hogs and larve being passed to humans in meat? Saw it in a book at Doc's office and didn't get to finish. Don't remember which mag but it was a Dec. publish date.

Never heard that, but I don't anything that eats carrion, and hogs eat carrion. I'm safe !. You would think that cooking it well would kill just about anything though.

Pork was always meant to be cooked very well. And tapeworms are just one of the many types of parasites they can carry. Cook it very very well. And you have nothing to worry about. Many other game animals also carry the same types of parasites. As well as some fish and fowl stock. Always cook your meat well.

Think they called it the Bobcat tape worm. It affects the brain in humans later in life. Only way to completely kill it was cooking the meat well done. Was a greenish blue colored worm.

Several people posted this on FaceBook....I had quite a few friends that shared it.

I wanted to share this information on feral hogs. We all know what a problem they are in the District and State. We all have people in our Counties that harvest and consume feral hogs. Last Thursday I received a phone call, in reference to pigs that had been processed and the fat of the meat had green specs imbedded in the fat. I tried to make the client tell me that he was seeing a blue color on the fat thinking the pigs may have eaten Warfarin. He then told me it was John Deere Green. I went to see for myself as you view the pictures you will see green color. To make a long story short I made several calls to specialist, no one knew what was going on. Saturday morning I received a call from Dr. Tom Hairgrove Extension Veterinarian, he visited with Dr. Tom Craig Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine a Clinical Parasitology’s he called it the larval of Spirometra mansonoide common name bob cat tapeworm it can infect Humans with this larval stage. The bob cat tapeworm has also been found in domesticated cats in East Texas. Meat that is contaminated with this type of infection and prepared any way other than well done could infect people. In humans this worm goes to the brain and can cause issues.

So many people posted it, I am not sure how valid the actual story is. Although, hogs can carry the parasite.

I think the bottom line is....make sure don't under cook your hog meat...nothing has changed there.

Edit to include link of the AgriLife Office statement.

Under certain conditions the tapeworms can affect the human brain.

I researched wild meat a great deal as an epidemiologist. Here is the one fact you need.

Other than a species of trichinella that polar bears get freezing your meat for 10 days will kill 100% of all parasites that would be in there. At that point you could even eat pork raw and be fine.

If you want to see something that will make you go "ugh", cut a piece of meat off of a wild hog, put it on a plate then pour some Coke on it and watch the little squiggly worms come out of the meat.

Wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't of seen it for myself.

HMMMM! I may have to try this

But I have CUT and cleaned many wild pigs and never seen a spec of a worm in the meat.

Nothing new whatsoever. Pork needs to be cooked WELL DONE at all times, 100% of the time, no exceptions. Freezing it, which happens most of the time anyway, is even better.
