Look up the chicken tax if you are wondering why we can't get them here

Interesting. From what a friend found out from a Toyota dealership manager they are working out the emissions stuff currently and want to bring one to market soon. Could this be that testing?

Once the lease is up these vehicles will be sold as "Demos" through a Toyota dealership. I used to work there but it's been a while.

The Hilux model isn't anything new they have been around since the 70's. Don't know why they stopped producing/shipping that model here.

My guess is this was a test mule used for testing new drive trains. If a Tacoma were to be seen with manufacturers plates filling up with diesel then the auto press would be all over it. But by testing a new drivetrain in a Hilux that already has a diesel option, no one bats an eye. Just my opinion.

Have fun with speculation but the Hilux is not being considered for the US market. The Tacoma is and will be the midsize truck offering in USA for the foreseeable future.

Due to having to provide documentation that a vehicle meets US emission standards it can not be imported to US, that does not translate to the gas version not meeting them rather the vehicle is produced for markets outside the US and has not been tested for it. Toyota would advise not importing it hers because there's zero support for it here, a dealer cannot get parts nor service it.
