For price, a jeep grand Cherokee is hard to beat. I've got a 2001 v8 4x4 with heated seats. Less than $2k invested. Spend the 4k saved on a tractor or some other useful tool!

I have a Nissan Xterra that is a good fit for what your describing I think. Have a high rack built on it now and it does very well. 4x4, heat, decent fuel mileage (v6) and could tow light loads on the lease. That AC and heat are really nice when needed IMO!
