But what does the clicker do to start the crystals growing?

I was in China last month and they were selling those at the market. Just click the little disk and it gets hot. Place it is a towel and boil it in water and it goes back to a liquid state and is ready to repeat the whole process again.

That's pretty cool. I grew up using those hand warmers, but they were store bought. Way warmer to the touch and more effective as far as heating up quickly than the ones you get now, but the heat didn't last as long.

I used one in Colorado a couple weeks ago and the heat did not last....30 min maybe. But the process was cool to watch.
          Hot hands are much better.

It disturbs the solution. Water drops to 32 and stays there until all molecules freeze, then it drops. In perfect conditions you can cool it below 32 but once disturbed, ice crystals form and the whole solution jumps up to 32. Same deal, Theis stuff just freezes at 100 degrees or whatever it is.

Had these years ago. Seemed that when I put in-activated packages in my pockets and pulled them out later to use they had always been inadvertently activated. IMO the single use Hot Hands type warmers are far better.
