    Water well questions

I have had one of my wells for 15 years and I realize I don't understand it.

My pipes in my well house froze and broke. I flipped off all breakers in the well house. As it thawed I started getting water to the barn. The pipes in the well house were frozen and broken. First I guess the breakers in the well house don't feed the pump. Second I guess I might have a pipe directly to the barn that doesn't go through the well house or pressure tank. Is that normal? As it thawed more it flooded the well house.

What is this part? It was between the pump and the tank and has the pressure switch on top. Looks like a spring and stopper inside.

That’s a back-flow valve. Can’t see from picture how the barn is getting water.

Backflow/check valve. The one on my well froze one year. Used a hair dryer to thaw it out.

The only exposed pipes are the one coming in from the well that goes through the back flow valve to the pressure tank and then back into the ground.

You could have a line that runs from the pump and bypasses the pressure tank. Mine is set up like this. But it should not be plumbed in to the rest of the system.

Need more pitchers to answer some questions

If you turned off the proper breaker to the well pump the water will eventually stop. There will be a pressure tank that will have residual pressure along with the water in all of the piping on your place.

How does the pump turn on and off if it has a bypass that comes off before the pressure switch and pressure tank.

There was no residual pressure. The tank was frozen and the pipes exploded. The pipes were not attached.

Hard to say with out looking at it. i know mine has a tee in before the pressure tank. I can turn on the sprinklers and it will not cause the pressure tank to call for water.
