    Growing Grass in Dense Shade?

Quick question for any landscapers on the green screen. My backyard has been a mud pit for the last year because i have two big trees that cover it in shade. My "New years resolution" is to get grass growing back there. I have a sprinkler system back there already and tried seeding it last year and it just grew really patchy and died. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Going to have to get creative...
Grass WON'T grow in heavy shade.
May can trim the trees up enough to get some light on the ground and get Some grass to grow where the sun hits.
Otherwise ground cover, stepping stones, Gravel walkway Etc.
    Good Luck.......

Talk to 2-1 Turf 254.893.2121 Celebration Turf . This will grow in the shade. Wife proved me wrong.

Floretam will probably be you best bet but not perfect. Bermuda will never grow well in shade.

As mentioned above no turfgrass will thrive for long in full shade. It may make it for a year, but by year two it will start to thin out and die. I tried every strain of grass known to modern man in the shade before giving up and going with ground cover. I put landscape edging around the shadiest areas and planted asian jasmine in some and purple wintercreeper in others. The first year as the roots get established they wont spread much but they will explode in their second season

If the trees are oaks shade is only 1/2 of the problem the other is the acid produced by the falling leaves, seeds and acorns.

Fescue will work, but it takes a lot of water in the summer to survive.

Thin the trees out from the inside out. Trim all the dead limbs out first then start looking at all the small limbs going to the big limbs after that. Cleaning the trees up like this won't affect the overall look of the trees but should let more light in. More light is the key.

I think Celebration Bermuda is your best option of all the turf grasses. I've had it for over 10 years and the best areas of my yard are the ones the get the most shade (50% shaded during the day).

What % would you say your backyard is? I don't know about total shade but it will definitely grow in a yard that is shaded half the time.

when the trees are in full bloom i would say the backyard is about 80% shaded its not very big.
