    Cummins: Block Heater ?

How long does it take to warm up a cummins engine block? I have never used mine on my 2003 dodge since it was new but I went to start mine today and it no go. I started it last night for the first time in about 2 weeks and had no problem.I let it run for about 30 minutes last night just to get the ice off of it. I want to know how long you can leave the heater plugged in as well. If the heater doesn`t work I will try the battery charger next. Thanks

I would imagine it would take 3-4 hours to heat up using block heater. I plug mine in on cold mornings with a timer that comes on at 2am and at 5am i don’t even have to wait for start signal. Very nice to have almost instant heat to.

I don't know if I'm doing it right but I leave mine plugged in overnight. I don't have a Cummings, I have a Powerstroke.

No cummins experience, but my 93 F250 w\pre-turbo 7.3 has a block heater. It certainly makes cold starts quick and smooth, but the truck hasn’t ever failed to start without the block heater unless the batteries were drained. I would plug in the charger now in addition to plugging in the block heater.

Same as Geezy, when I have needed the block heater I just left it plugged in all night.

Another 7.3 here as well, plugged in all night.

My motorhome manual says 4 hours for my 6.7.

No cummins, but my 6.0 and 6.7 both have them. The 6.0 gets plugged in over night when it’s going to get below freezing and always starts right up. I’ve never plugged in the 6.7. My brother has a 6.7 Cummins (I’m obviously the smart one) that he has never plugged in. I think the timer idea is perfect, set it to come on a few hours before you’re ready to go and it shouldn’t be a problem.

I used to have my 06 plugged into a timer that would come on 2 or 3 hours before I needed to leave and it was the same temp when I started it as it was when I plugged it in all night.

Try cycling grid heater twice and see is she fires up.

I have 2003 cummins as well and never plugged it in while living in Texas and never had a problem, but after the first 2 years up here in this frozen tundra I had to start plugging it in. Since I don't drive it very much I just leave it plugged in all the time up here. One thing you have to watch if it gets really cold is the fuel gelling. I put some stuff in the fuel that keeps that from happening, but took me one really cold winter to figure that out up here. Up here, even with it plugged in and new batteries last year, if I don't start it up once a week the batteries will go down and have to be charged when it is cold like it is now, single digits to negative..... good luck.

I put a battery charger on it and it started in about 15 minutes. I tried starting it the first time as soon as I put the key in and it and I think that was the problem and not the battery. There was a building on fire I was going to and didn`t wait for the light to go out. I am going to leave the heater plugged in tonight and see how warm it is in the morning @ 4a.m.

I had an 04 Cummins and three hours were the minimum for me. But on the really cold nights, I'd plug it in before I went to bed and let it run all night.

My 2012 Cummins doesn’t have the block heater.

It was single digits at our lease Sun/Mon and it fired right up.

It does take a little bit to get heat though. That’s the main benefit of the plug in heater to me.

They have them on the block, they just dont come with the cord anymore. With good batteries you really dont need the cord but it is nice to be able to start them up and blow warm air almost immediately. Its an easy install to put the cord on.
