    frozen well---Happy New Year

I always say that everything is going great until it isn't. We have been in our new home for 2 months and found out that I need more insulation around my well. It has a concrete enclosure placed over it with a lid but that is not enough to keep it from freezing. My other house had the same thing but there was some insulation inside as well, plus it was not directly in the wind. I spent about an hour with a blow dryer and was lucky to get it unthawed and no busted pipes. Happy New Year !!

Sorry to hear... I pulled the drain plug on mine to prevent it from reezing. Learned my lesson last year.. my well and pump is only for my irrigation system but was still a $900 mistake last year

I think you thawed it out.
        It "unthawed" overnight.

I have a heat lamp on it now. Plan on putting some old blankets on it until I can get some better insulation. This is our first winter since building our house and did not know what I could get away with.

I turned the pump off and drained all the tank water and outside lines...

Careful with the blankets and heat lamp. Having a fire in the well house won't be any better than frozen pipes/well.

I do not have a well house. My pressure tank is in my garage so I am not concerned with it.. When I put the blankets on the pump I plan on taking the heat lamp out. My pump has a 3" thick concrete enclosure with a concrete lid.

I got in the first cracked pressure pump in today for repair. I get several every year to weld up.

In my well house I have both a light and a small heater. Kind of like wearing a belt and suspenders......My pump house is also well isolated. Good luck.

I use the “Golden Rod” heaters that are made for gun safes. They come in several lengths. I Tyrap them to the pipe and the Tyrap foam pipe insulation over them and around the pipe. I seal the end where the wire enters with silicone caulk. Plug in in December and unplug in March. No danger of fire.

I have a regular light bulb burning when it goes below 32.

I feel for you guys...Try and find some heat trace tape locally if you can. The best stuff to keep your pipe from freezing. Self regulating.
When I bought my place in Harper and my neighbors found out I was an electrician...I wound up doing 2 heat trace jobs on wells. Better than bringing pie to their door .
                            Hope no damage for y'all.

They sell a plug adapter that kicks on when it gets below 35-40 degrees. We use that with a shop work light pointed at the pressure switch and haven’t had freezing issues since. Not sure how you could make that would with the small enclosure but it’s worth it for piece of mine.
