    Killed me an Axis!

Went out last night trying to use some of these tags that are burning up in my wallet. Felt lazy, so I brought the 30-30 and sat my son's rifle blind. About 4:15 I look up and just about have a heart attack. 60 yds out, AXIS! Something about those axis gets me all fired up.

Looking him over through the binos, I had a brief "give him another 6 weeks" moment. I got over that real quick, remembering I hunt a very small, no-fence property, and in 4 years this is only the 4th time I have seen an exotic.

Lined up the shot and touched it off. Right as he bolted, my trail cam flashed. I didn't pull the card, but there's a chance for a pretty cool pic on there. Found him at the end of a good blood trail, about 40 yds from the shot, piled up in a big mess of brush.

He dressed at a little over 160 lbs.

I asked this on another thread, but I'll throw it out again. Is there enough horn under all that velvet to make a euro mount? The hide is already in the freezer, set to be a rug.

Thats a nice axis right there, and some darn good eats!! Ithink there is enough antlers under there. Had an axix doe and 2 yearlings walk in on me last week but thought they were to far ot after they left and was able to rangefind the spot they were a whole 25 yrds out!!!! No axix but a very could lesson learned rangefind first not after the deer leave. I took a real nice axis 3 years ago w my rifle he went 178#s and about 29"s long

Congrats Jon. That might make a pretty cool euro, but some darn good eats for sure. I've heard they (taxi) can save velvet antlers, but not real sure?

First off congrats on the axis.......and yes there should be enough horn under the velvet to do a euro mount, but I would euro mount it with the velvet on. Van Dykes Taxidermy Supply carries a cure for velvet antlers and it is easy to use and work greats. You will want to macerate the skull if you are going to save the velvet to clean the skull. Beetles will eat the velvet and boiling is not a good idea for a skull anyway....

I sent you a PM a few minutes ago. The head has been sitting out in the yard all night. I'm thinking the velvet might not be salvageable.

Congrats. I just ordered the solution for preserving the velvet from Van Dykes. It just happens to be on sale right now for around ten bucks. Good luck.
