Seeing that TPWD wants to possibly have youth season all of October, why not just open rifle season to all, starting in October?? There is already going to be rifles out there if it passes, why not let adults in on it?? I haven't quite decided which way to go, even with youth only season in October, if it passes. I like the idea of bowhunters having that little extra help, of one month to ourselves. I also think, some of the better deer could get harvested before a bowhunter gets a chance. What are your thoughts???

Like I have stated on every other thread about this topic. The idea behind the proposal is to get more kids involved in the sport of hunting. It is not intended to give a longer season to those kids who already hunt. And the only kids that will take advantage of an extra month are the kids who already hunt. So this proposal is a dumb idea. It will not work the way it was intended to work and the next thing on the agenda in 2010 will be to move the start date of general rifle season to start coinciding with archery season.

This proposal is a farce for several reasons. If you want to hunt longer, find an MLD lease and get on it.

If you make it a general season from Oct thru January you ruin a lot of hunting opportunities on small acreages. By that I mean that there are a lot of small leases where bowhunting is a quality sport in October, but where the deer disappear when the rifles come out.
Second, the main or perhaps the only reason a lot of us took up bowhunting was that there was an extra month to hunt. We never would have bought the equipment nor tried the sport without an archery season. After hunting with a bow for a few years we were hooked, but the season was the reason we tried it in the first place.

Lets face it there are adults that use the youth season to start their own season early! Dedicated fathers rarely use the youth season for the kids...they make time during general season for them! It the same way on youth hunts through TPWD,there are some unethical people out there! If they want to get more youth involved then they need to look at thinning deer out of some camp grounds. They become resident deer and the health of some of them decline by always getting handouts from well intentioned campers. The controlled camp ground hunts would be under strict deptment supervision to insure the youth are the hunters!
