    Advice needed on first hunt

Want to take one of my 13 year old sisters out for her first ever hunt. Have a ground blind set up with deer that come in from 15-25 yards consistently. She doesnt have any rifle experience, so dont want to go that route. I was thinking about letting her use my shotgun set up on a shooting stick.

I figured with her limited shooting experience (only shot bb guns up to this point) that it would be simple enough for her to line up the bead for an accurate enough shot using buck shot.

Am I on the right track here or no?

I'd use a .243 or .223 at that range pretty hard to miss and less recoil than a shotgun.

.243 because of small recoil......Same concept as with a BB gun

Buckshot might make her hate hunting. Also might not be dead when you get to it. Use a rifle in the above cals

I bet a couple hours at a range with the recommended calibers and a lesson in shot placement and you will have a little huntress on your hands. Good luck!

.223 or .243 is what i would use. She should be able to handle that recoil. At that range she will have a hard time missing. Just school her on shot placement before you go and she will do fine. Good luck!!

Honestly at that range I think you're better off with a crossbow. Easy to shoot, virtually no recoil, no chance for her to get spooked.

I 2nd the crossbow vote if you can get one. If not go with a .243 with low recoil ammo. A shotgun with buckshot is a horrible idea for her.

Le her shoot some before you go. Practice shot placement on a drawing of a deer.

Has she ever been in a deer blind? If not, I would make that the first hunt so she knows what to experience.
Afterwards a low cal rifle (as mentioned above) with low recoil ammo would be the way to go, AFTER she gets some practice.
IMO if you want her to continue to hunt for years to come then set her up for success. Rushing into an opportunity just to get it done will be no fun for you or her should something not go as planned.
either way, good job getting her out! The only way to keep the hunter population growing is to get them out and teach them!

Best advice so far. She needs to spend time at the range shooting whatever weapon you are going to put in her hands, before she gets in the blind with it. At least a couple practice shots at paper or target with crossbow.

Agreed. I'd happily let you borrow mine but looks like you live a good bit away.
