I often see folks refer to someone as a "friend of mine".
Who is mine?
If it is someone you are referring to as your friend, wouldn't it be appropriate to just say "my friend" or "a friend"?

I don't get it.

"a friend of mine" is probably not a friend of yours,,
"my friend" is singular, they may have more than one friend,,,
"a friend" is just kinda blah
