    Flying American with Gun Case

So the rules with AA say gun cases can't exceed total linear length (l+w+d) of 62". Per the official policy, if it does exceed that length, oversize baggage fees of $200 apply. I usually fly SWA and they don't care. Just curious from those of you that have flown with rifles or shotguns on American, have you successfully traveled with large rifle size pelican/other cases? Has anyone ever had airline try to charge these fees for gun cases that are somewhat normal size? Flying to Alaska and don't want multiple $200 fees. Thanks for sharing experiences.

Yes they will charge you. I would always fly Harley on SW to avoid that.

Just seems crazy that they measure by L+w+d vs volume or longest length for oversized.

If you check in at a smaller airport, they won't charge you. That's a trick I use and it works. Bigger airports will charge you. Small little city connections of AA will just tag it in.
