    Hide tanning question.

Anyone tan a hide with the hair on for a rug? I would like to know if it is better to just send it out. I am a do it yourselfer and would rather try on my own but don't want to spend alot of time on it and be very dissappointed. Any thoughts

i tan alot of hides and it is time consuming but its a fun process and i enjoy it. the hide has more meaning to it to me by doing it myself. if you do decide to tan it yourself get the lutan f tanning kit from cabelas or van dykes taxidermy, its easy....hardest part it breaking the hide after tanning, breaking refers to the softness, pliability afterwards.

It's not that hard at all. Here's another vote for the Lutan F kit. Just follow the directions. I also enjoy tanning my own hides.

I'm not energetic enough to break it ... I vote "send it out".

send it out. Indians used to chew on it to break them in.

Check McKenzies Taxidermy supplies too if you want to DIY. You can call the 800# and speak to a taxidermist on staff with questions. Good luck. They helped me out with 2 velvet antler mounts I did a couple of years back.
