Great info. I'd like to see other trackers give their experiences.

I'm with outbreaker though. The only arrows I have stay in the animal are the ones that drive into the opposite shoulder and they usually make it through to the skin. In the old days, I worried about heads cutting with the arrow end and it was a consideration. Now, a have so few that actually stay with the animal to make it a nonfactor in my selection of broadheads. So, I take the big cut option.

I agree with your shot placement assesment. I stay away from the shoulder. Shoot about 1/3 up and a couple inches behind the shoulder. If I'm off, I have room for error in all directions.

Great post Glen. I agree with others that it would be good if other dog owners would post their tracking stats.

The ones that seem to do the best are the long blades with less angle on the cut- seems they slice more material goinog through- the short blades seem to punch through and move lots of stuff to the side without slicing it up. Remember this is very few animals and only my experience and on animals that were not shot through the pump station. Any and all of them do a great job when put through the heart and lungs.

Outbreaker- I hope your arrows remained stuck 6 inches in the dirt on the other side. Ive seen arrows and bullets do some strange things when stuck into fur. Never say never. Ive seen some well tuned hotrod bows shot into one of Mother Natures inventions and something stop an arrow for some reason- dont know what or why but it did. Not the bow, arrows, or hunters fault- just happens.

When I was younger I hunted with a 93lb compound shooting 2317's and frequently had the arrow travel farther than the deer (ground blinds).

Now that I am older I have backed off to 75lb single cam and am shooting carbons with aquarium tubing inside to make them heavier. Close to a 500 gr arrow going 280fps.

          I am with tuthdoc.....I like 1.75" cutting dia's

I know one of those animals that were lost and saw it several weeks later at the same feeder. Shoulder shot and later taken out with a rifle to confirm. Good info, Glen!

I can vouch for Speedy, that dog is AWSOME!
As far as BHs go, I'm switching back to my Thunderheads. They at least leave some serious holes.

              Thanks again Glen!

You gotta watch out for Speedy... he'll steal your burger if you leave it within his reach....

Great post, Glen. I agree that good shot placement results in short
tracking jobs. What has helped me this year is the J-Bone theory of when to shoot."Get his front leg stretched out and aim for the off shoulder about 1/3 theway up." I shot 2 bucks and numerous pigs this year and the longest track was 50 yds. with great blood trails using Slick Tricks. Rage b/h's look good and I will give them a try soon, if Tuthdoc uses them they must be good!

He'll also try to climb in your sleeping bag with you and lick the heck out of your face while trying to sleep.
