if you gonna plink get a semi-auto the Compensated Glocks are real nice to handle but will require hearing protection.

If you wanna blow stuff up get an ole .44 mag revolver. This one won't be as practical to carry around.

For all purpose use I would suggest a .357 revolver. IMO that is the best all purpose weapon for home defense and hunting.

Personally Im a .45 kinda guy. If I shoot'em I wanna knock them down not just make them mad.

I am retiring the 357 as a dual purpose gun. I just got my new Taurus Judge. This thing will shoot 45's as well as 410 shotgun shells. I shot it some over the weekend & love it. For home defense it will be awesome, no precision marksmanship needed, 410 buckshot will make one **** nice pattern. The lightweight version will also be light enough for a bowhunting companion.

Revolver..simple to load simple to use no jam possibilities and fun to shoot... Caliber as big as you want but stay in the range you can handle... .357 is good and .38 ammo will shoot through it and is cheap.... I carry a Glock 22C and it has been very reliable for years now...But if you do not know much about pistols stay simple and graduate slowly... And take a few lessons at the local range I promise it will help...

U might as well get a compact model u will probably start wanting to carry before long. I have the .40 S&W M&Pc. Its been the perfect gun for me!

I carried a S&W .357 revolver for years but switched over to a semi auto .45 and haven't looked back...I bought a Charle Daily 1911 ($300 cheapy for the woods) it is lighter and not as bulky as the revolver I had so this makes it easier to carry for extended trips in the woods. I like this gun better than my 9mm and my .380 b/c it does have more "knock down" and that was what I wanted it for....

357's always gd choice, the 40 cals aren't too bad either, keep the price of ammo in mind depending on how much you plan on shooting it also. good luck

If you go revolver, I'd say a .357 is a good all around caliber. If you're going to go semi-auto, go with a .40 S&W or .45 ACP. With that being said, go with what feels right to you. You are the one who will have to use it and carry it. Check out several models and most gun ranges have several you can rent to see what you think.

+1 Ruger GP100 in 4 inch will work nicely.
