another--- what is this tool thingy?

My neighbor ran across this as he is cleaning out his garage. It is from Houston I believe.

Anyone know what this is? It is about 4" long and stout metal. It has 3 notches in it. 2 at the top and one on the bottom.

What makes you believe it is from Houston?

You wedge it into cracks in the rock or brick and tie your line to it so you can keep good straight lines.

I don't really remember exactly, i think the different notches are for different sized mortar joints. I just remember masons having them when I was a kid, I don't think they're used much anymore. They use twigs now for long runs to keep the string line from sagging.

We used to always get those, twigs, and line blocks as promotional stuff from mortar companies to give to bricklayers. TXI is a mortar company.
