how to plan a DIY elk hunt?

Me and a buddy are want to try and do diy bow elk hunt next year. We want to camp and do it on public land.
Problem is neither of us have any experience in this. What's the best way to start figuring this out. Where would y'all go for public land and ease of getting a tag. We are aware it will be tough and may not be success for a couple of seasons as we figure it out but got to start some where.
    Any advice is appreciated.

I would start in Colorado with over the counter tags. You can also go on Colorado dow's website and find maps and unit information that you can use to narrow down the units you would like to hunt. Also once you narrow it down some calling the dow officers in that area can give you great information on the elk in the area and good advice for hunting there. That would be my starting point.

Go the first year without high hopes and maybe you will get lucky. You will learn a lot and have a blast if you enjoy the outdoors. I've been a few times but have had to skip last few yeas with kids and sports. I will go back on a yearly basis when the time is right in m life.

Join "hunting Fool" and call them and ask for help...best 100 bucks you'll spend for great advice, great magazine and stories, and they send you a list with numbers of people who hunted the unit you draw with numbers from the previous season. Great deal. I still communicate with a guy who gave me advice in Wyoming.

I would recommend Huntin' Fool as well. In addition to one of the best magazines in the hunting space, you also gain access to their PHA's (professional hunt advisors). They can help you locate an area to hunt that works best for you, give you a breakdown on the quantities/quality of elk, assist with access points, and so on. Truly a great resource.

If you'd like a chance to win a membership, XENEK is doing a giveaway that includes a Huntin' Fool membership, a high quality ground blind, and some other great products. Drawing is Dec 10. https://huntxenek.com/fall-giveaway-2017/

Here is what I am doing:

Read the elk thread on here as well.

join Rokslide.com and start searching and reading through the gear sections.

Become obsessed with harvest data (I have an excel sheet that I can forward you if you give me your email address)

Get a good pack and boots and start training NOW.

I would say put in for NM & KY..

If you don't win, I would make the extra drive to Idaho.. Colorado is tough and takes a while to learn, but you can get lucky anywhere

I was watching Randy's show the other day, and there is a trial for Gohunt.com I'll have to re-watch the last show for the promo code.

GoHunt can help you with some of your questions about where to go and easy of getting tags.

But don't over look TBH's elk thread. Tons of info on how to get started - http://discussions.texasbowhunter.co...&highlight=elk

I would suggest a drop camp in CO if you've never been. It saves you the pain of CO OTC which is painful. Steep and Thick.

If you are dead set on packing it in I would suggest you do a scouting trip. Ideally to your hunting area but somewhere to simulate. First trip of this kind turns into a gear/logistics/food/water/etc...trip and working out the kinks seriously hinders a real hunt. Get the best gear you can afford to start. If you continue to do it not only will it get easier but you'll know what you need.
