    Ankle braces - any suggestions?

My 13yr old son, 5’7 180lbs, rolled his right ankle a couple of times during football season. No major sprain or injury, just nagging soreness. Getting ready for basketball now, so we’re looking at ankle braces. Slip-on sock type, ones with Velcro wraps, shoestring lace-ups...there are a bunch of different styles available. Other than just buying one of each and trying them out, any suggestions for one that gives some support, but also allows decent flexibility?

    Thanks!

I had broken an ankle and sprained another playing ball in school. They're pricey but I ended up getting the Aircast. Good buy for sure.

Aircast with the ankle hinge and double Velcro straps.

Look into active ankle. My daughter has used these for years in club and school volleyball. They are about $45 each, but they are good. Easy to use since they stay in the shoe and you just velcro them when putting the shoes on. I've seen them save many ankle injuries over the years.

Stromgren brand lace-ups were the best years ago. I can't imagine there is been a major shift in ankle braces, but these were much better than the other options at the time. A good tape job on game day is hard to beat.

Active ankle is the one I was thinking of with the hinged lower.

The most important thing that he can do is strengthen the ankle and work on flexability. Once the ankle is strained it is prone to reoccur. Take him to a manual therapist, strengthen and get em flexible

I ordered my 14yo daughter one for a real bad sprain she had playing volleyball. It's a little pricy but it has worked very well for her. In fact she wants one for her good foot for support during other events.

Best I ever used was ASO Ankle Stabilizer with correct taping from our athletic trainer.

Biggest thing would be to make sure they stretch and work their ankles up every day. Thats the only thing that helped me from being out for the season. I probably took up a few pallets of tape and pre wrap each season from getting both wrists, both ankles and my right knee taped up for football and lacrosse.

Active ankle is what we use...easy on/easy off and pretty good support. If they are prone to rolling ankles, we tape them up!

Was going to say a german ish name brand - I think stromgren was it. Had a bad sprain a couple years ago. That brace was awesome.

Have the school order it and you pay for it. They will have better pricing and better options through Alert Services.

I have a similar issue with one of mine. I broke my leg and since then I have noticed it being weaker than the other. After this past hunting season I decided I should try a brace. I'm in for this

I have messed up my ankles reaaaaaaally badly. The last time I rolled it really did me in. 4 months of therapy 3 times a week, and it still hurts two years later. I wear this one now after buying all of them.

Zamst A2-DX Ankle Brace provides strongest support for the ankle without limiting mobility. For high ankle sprains (Grade III) , chronic ankle instability and reduces inversion & eversion movements. Especially recommended for Basketball and other sports that require a lot of quick turnaround movements.

its really good. good movement and flexibility and comfy.

Also, like has been mentioned, do strengthening exercises and do all you can in that department. Don't rely on a brace to make your joints strong.

Having not clicked on any of the links yet, would these be comfortable in a hunting boot with socks?
