There is a new book just out called "The last Sheriff in Texas"
It's about the infamous Bee County Sheriff Vail Ennis.
As a small kid I remember Vail and all the stories my daddy told me about him.
I don't know what the final body count was but he was a crack shot with a pistol and he didn't miss. I once saw him throw a quarter in the air and shoot a hole in it. When he would come by our house to visit I would be frozen and never say a word until he left. A few years later we lived On E. Hutchinson St. just two blocks from Vail. As a teen I would speak to him but still think about the stories and the gun fights.
He carried a Thompson and one story says he rigged a machine gun on the front of his car with a solenoid so he could end a car chase in quick fashion.
My daddy pointed out two locations near Beeville where Vail was involved in a shoot out. One was small wood frame house on Hwy 59 west of town. My daddy stopped and showed me all the bullet holes in the house from his Thompson. I stuck my finger in one of the holes and then took a step back and was thinking what it was like. Even to this day when I drive by where that house was standing I shudder a little.
There is also very good book about the Texas Sheriff and their power in the county. "The Texas Sheriff: Lord of the County Line
