Your best bet is to go to your local archery shop and let them help you get set up. Arhcery can be expensive up front if you buy everything new. You can definitly buy used equipment, but make sure you know your draw length first. Try as many bow brands as possible and find the bow that you are most comfortable with. Just because someone else shoots a particular brand doesn't mean it is the right brand for you. Welcome to the world of bowhunting.......

Shoot as many bows as you can at the shops before buying... Make sure you are comfortable with the bow, once you have purchased and have the bow let the guy that sold it to you help you set it up then shoot it as much as you possibly can..... Practice is the main thing I can think of, the rest of it you will learn by doing or as you run into a situation you can ask on here... Good luck brother...

These guys have said it all, and they're right! You get what you want and can afford. Don't let others make your choices for you. Get what you shoot best and most consisitent. These guys will help you out...just come to the fire! When you get rigged up, show us some pics. Bienvenidos hermano y buenas suerte!

Jake, at 19, I assume you are not rollin' in the dough and need to be cost conscious..correct? If so, I would consider buying a used bow (after you determine draw length, etc.) Don't spend big bucks on your first bow, because you surely will decide down the road what you really want. You can get some excellent bows from people who just bought the latest new ones.
Then, I would practice, practice, practice and then find a place to hunt hogs this spring and summer to prepare you for deer next year. Find another bowhunter in your area to practice with and learn from. Got some TBHers in your general area on here.
Good luck and welcome to the site!

First welcome to the site and welcome to the sport, you are going to get hooked for life if you are fortunate enough to take an animal with a bow. Berandel has explained a lot, please remember this site holds a wealth of information from very knowledgeable people and this is the place to ask questions. Remember before you ask a question do a search on it first. Then remember that when you ask a question, you are going to get an array of answers and you will have to sort through them to make an informed decision or choice.
Good Luck

Take the NBEF Bowhunter Ed course. It's not required for bowhunting in TX (or Cali) but the knowledge you'll gain is well worth the few hours. The instructors are not in it for money (the $20 cost covers materials) but because they're passionate about bowhunting.
Secondly, either before or after buying a bow, take 3-4 lessons with somebody who's an archery instructor. Taking them before you buy a bow will teach you the same form with a bow loaned by the instructor, and you'll be much more knowledgeable when you go to look for a bow.
What's your budget? A new top-of-the-line bow, fully rigged (sight, rest, release, stabilizer, arrows, quiver) can cost $1000-$1200+. Finding somebody selling a used bow is a good way to get into the sport for a lot less.
Welcome, taking animals up and close is the only way to go. Yes, there are a few bowhunters in liberal-land, I'm priveledged to be invited to the TBH campfire.

Go to 3 or 4 pro shops and shoot alot of different bows, see which one fits you. Once you narrow it down to a couple of bows that you would like to have, check the classifieds here, craigs list (be careful though), ebay, ect.... Also some bow shops offer pretty good discounts on last years models if they have any left.
Dont think you HAVE to get a "big" name bow like bowtech, hoyt, matthews, ect.. That stuff is all ford vs chevy. Find a bow that fits you and shoots well for you that is in your price range.
Good luck.
