    Epic dad fail

Took my son hunting this evening. Just bought him a tc contender 223. Stocks a little long but he shot it pretty good. He didnt hunt yesterday, me and his sister did. I bought some Hornady Full Boar 50gr gmx. His sister shot a doe at about 85yds yesterday evening. Dropped her with a high spine shot. Today i bought some Hornady american whitetail 60gr cause i wanted him to shoot a little bigger grain. Fail #1, not shooting gun with that ammo first. Shouldve known better. Fail # 2, him shooting off a set of shooting sticks that hes never done before. He missed a doe 3x. She hardly even flinched at shot. She finally went back into the woods. Then we notice some does at opposite end of field with a small buck chasing them, it was quite the show. They wasnt coming any closer so we went to them. Saw a shooter(legal deer). He got on him, missed him. Doe was still there. Missed her too. None of the deer even jumped or moved like shot was anywhere close. I felt horrible. I swapped ammo without even shooting it. And let him shoot off shooting sticks without practicing. I told him i was sorry for not having him better prepared. He said “its ok dad, i got to spend time with you, and seen some deer.” I about lost it right then.
When we got home, i cut his stock down to fit. Gonna get him a sims slip on recoil pad. You can bet that we will practice off shooting sticks this week and be ready for next weekend.

You guys will remember the evening for years to come. And laugh about it. Don't worry. The boy had a great time and that's what matters.

But jeez dude, test the equipment and the shooter. Just kidding. Enjoy it. Life moves pretty fast.

That’s one rule I have with my kids or any kid before they hunt with me they have to shoot so I know they can make the shot and I know the gun is on.
It could have been worse he could have crippled one or, what normally happens, you see and miss the biggest buck of a life time!!
He may have had a slightly different opinion then.

Good luck on the next one I bet you have him dialed in right.

Yeah but he got to spend time with his dad and that's all that mattered to him.

It happens. There will be plenty more opportunities for him. You're taking him out there and spending time with him. Whether you hit or miss anything doesn't matter too much. You ain't failing at anything I can assure you.

I agree, at least y'all saw something, and didn't cripple a bunch of deer. That discourages a lot of people, especially kids. Lesson learned, no harm no foul! My FIL did something similar a few years back. Bought a rifle at a pawn shop and assumed it was sighted in...... I have no idea why! He was so far off it wasn't funny....... even though it was. With plenty of practice, it sounds like we should have LDP's next weekend.

Good thing he’s young. Yall can laugh about it one day.

This is one of those things you gota learn from but at least you are owning up to your mistake.

Shrugs you made some mistakes but you took your son hunting and that's what it's all about.

Fail, hardly so. You actually shared a lesson in why being prepared is important. Believe it or not, he will learn well from this. Good job on being patient.
