My wife and I went last June. We took princess cruise lines. We really had a good time. Be prepared for cold and rain! We managed to leave our jackets in the rental car, never to be seen again. We bought a couple of light weight jackets in Alaska but they just weren't up to the task of keeping us warm enough.

In Aug. 2000 (for our late Honeymoon)
We did a "reverse cruise" ? (visiting various ports by way of roads instead of by ship).
Used frequent flyer miles to fly Dallas to Anchorage (thru Portland or Seattle), rented a car, and then we drove down to Kenai (college roommate lives there).
Kimberly and I went to several other ports along the coast (Homer & Seward) staying at B&B's along the way (excellent seafood).
Went on the Kenai Fjords day cruise as well.
Visited after Labor Day, off season rates for the Bed & Breakfasts (and this is when our AA miles vouchers were good)
We reeled in fish until our arms were tired along the Kenai, fishing from the riverbank.
Visited the Alaskan State Fair in Anchorage while we were there (talk about some HUGE produce).
On our flight back we spoke to people who were on return flights from their cruises and they kept asking what cruise line we were on that we saw sooo much wildlife? (moose, caribou, bears, mountain goats, whales, seals, otters...)
Involved more driving and moving around on our part, but we had a blast at a reasonable price (Aug. 2000).
My parents did a cruise too or from Vancouver & Alaska and they loved it (not sure which one or with whom?)
I'm sure the cruises are a more relaxed pace because someone else is doing the scheduling and driving for you.
Love to make a return visit, not sure when to fit it into "family schedule"?

Fly in and rent a car or RV and go where and when you want to. I have never done the cruise thing. But most of my clients said it was great if you wanted to eat good, spend your days with a bunch of geriatics and watch Alaska go by while standing on the rail. If you want to fish go in August. You will get in on some great Silver and Hailbut fishing and the crowds are starting to decrease. By all means try to do a fly out so that you really see what the Greatland is all about.
I spent three summers there guiding and I learned a few in's and out's. Contact me if I can be of any assistance.
Tom
