Growing up, all i wanted to do was play basketball. Was a pretty decent little 2A player. The nba game doesn't even resemble the game we played. Without having too much "good old days" syndrome, i think it was a better game back then.
I think the nba could be great again. But radical changes are needed. The players are so much bigger and more athletic, they make the court really small. I would:
Make the court about 40 feet longer and 25 feet wider. Make it big enough to open up some space and let the small fast guys have some play room.
Raise the rim to 12'. Make a dunk mean something again.
Allow substitutions "on the fly".
Go back to more of a non-contact sport and enforce traveling, etc.
And reduce timeouts to one per half, per team.

Loved it in the days of Bird, Johnson, Jordan. Wouldn't watch it on a bet now.....get off my lawn.
