I have been at the office since 7:30 am...just waiting on this to finish. My boss said you need to hurry so I can get some work done.

          Part Three the final chapter.

10:42am…always take time to thank the good Lord, family, and your close friends for the smallest gifts in life. As we worked out of what seemed to be the never ending thicket and in the direction of the nearest water source we ran into what at that time seemed to be just another five stand barbed-wire cross fence that would lead us in the direction of the closest surface water. Grateful to follow what was just another cross fence on the ranch we would use it as a much needed clearer patch to once again recoup and walk north. Turned out to be a pathway to one of the greatest decisions known to man…should we go right as planned (towards the water) or go left down what some would see as just another fence line? That is where “my buddy” comes into play yet again. Seeing the optional trail he quickly points out how nice and inviting the trail did look. One of those trails that was just calling his name…and me not wanting to miss what then seemed like a “sign” of intervention we unknowingly headed left down this soon to be gate way of fun.

10:47am…slowly walking down the trail, carefully watching the dog, trying to read and understand her movements. Intensely sweeping our heads back and forth looking for a sign, not so much a typical yellow “deer crossing” highway sign (although that might have made it easier not near as much fun), but that of a struggling buck type of crossing sign, blood, gut, hair on the fence type of sign. When just like that…BAM…the dog slams her nose to the ground and leaves little doubt that she has found something she likes. (A handler should know his dog if they have been teamed up for a few years.) Amazingly graceful “The Dog” never breaks her stride as she effortlessly splits the lower two strands of barbed wire crossing the fence as if it were never there. (now zoom in camera and focus on the fence and path she just took) I could not help but notice the tight area she just crossed and wonder how would the buck make it through that gap in the fence? If I was gut shot, not sure I would have went that way. (camera zooms out) My buddy and I intensely gaze into the woods. I more so watching the handheld GPS as if it were game seven of the ALCS (had to use that GO ASTROS!!!) and “my buddy” (who I will now name as Bowtech08 for those who have not studied the thread) kept full attention on the woods. When all of the sudden Bowtech08 lets out an almost haunting sound he chooses to call a Cherokee Indian type of war cry. Shrieking and Shouting “get your gun…there he is!!!” The real commotion was just now getting started. DISCLAIMER#2: Still not 100% sold on if it was the dog that jumped the Buck or Bowtech08’s war cry. He called it a war cry…I think he sounded like a girl . Ok back to the sound of leaves and limbs thrashing coming out of the jungle. It is clear now the untamed beast was making his move directly towards us. Yet again with another self proclaimed Cherokee Indian war cry, Bowtech08 lets out another haunting sound, this time (once again in perfect movie magic) it seemed slow and drawn out “geeettt… yoooour… guuuun… reeeadyyy”. Then as majestic as it sounds the buck comes crashing out of the woods in an attempt to hurdle the barbed wire. Only to come up short with his (still in super slow motion) majestically leap, making it clearly obvious as he flipped head over hoof almost landing in Bowtech08’s lap, this buck is no where near 100%. Given the close proximity of the enraged wildlife in reference to ‘My buddy” Bowtech08 I wisely lowered the weapon. The buck continues his attempt to escape the inevitable quickly disappearing into woods…direction South.

10:49am…you might be asking where is the dog in all of this? No doubt she is making her way back to the fence line in dramatic fashion. Ripping through the brush and just as graceful as she crossed before, she splits the strands of fencing. Only to be slowed by the lead I purposely left on her (long story don't get me started). This is where Bowtech08 and I took but only a fraction a quick second to discuss the recent events and head out on our newly formed mission. I personally more so wanting to follow the dog… (just to make sure she did not get tangled with her lead in the briar infested tunnels ahead. Especially after reading about Buff’s lost dog) …make the choice to give Bowtech08 the sidearm so he could take the path of least resistance and make his way back around the thicket to hopefully catch up with this wounded and slowing gift from God.

10:49am…we part ways, I in the direction of the dog via GPS and him the path of least resistance. It doesn’t take long and you can hear the fight break loose. Snarling, growling, barking intensely, with sounds brush crashing, and limbs breaking finally this buck was now bayed up. (BACK STORY on “The Dragon Slayer”, “The Dog” AKA Daisy. Some of you on here have seen this dog work a hog. She is just plain mean and fearless, up close and personal in your face kind nasty.) Now the only thing left to do is get there as fast as we can. With all of the commotion a blind man could of navigated his way to this bay if not for the densely armored vines virtually in every direction. The mythical sounds of hungry wolves circling their pray made it obvious where the showdown was taking place, leaving no need for the GPS.

11:00am…Utilizing my inner warrior like spirit, putting all my ninja training into effect, I somehow navigated the remainder of this obstacle course with flawless precision. The only problem is… how in the heck did I beat chubby boy, Bowtech08 to the bay??? Now what…he has the side arm??? Where is Bowtech08? Knowing there is no way he could not hear the commotion, I call out to him in true Marko Polo fashion. Instantly Bowtech08 responds and is clearly not too far away. The game of Marko Polo continues as to make sure we are clear both about our locations before shots are fired. With in a few minutes of this childhood game, out steps the soon to be legendary Bowtech08 directly on the opposite side of the buck looking like just got into a fight with a ninja juice blender. Ol’ boy had blood dripping off of his ears and scratch marks covering his arms and neck…so much for the path of least resistance ROTFLM”KISS THIS”O. Give credit where credit is due…Bowtech08 was pumped and ready, never complaining, and appeared completely un-phased by the amount of blood loss pouring from his left ear.

11:03am…with the buck now worn out and willingly lying down as if to say, “I give up”, I quickly call off the dragon slayer. Making sure the dog as well as I were clear of the assumed finishing shot. It all came down to this…I gratefully give the “all clear” to ethically finish off this mythical, magical, robotic, zombie like, eight-pointed dragon buck. Almost as if on command the shot rang out…and then another...and another…and another…ok I think he is dead now Bowtech08??? Sounds of what almost seemed to be an automatic weapon echoed in the woods. My first thought was Ol’Boy was clearly getting his revenge for the cuts that now scar his body. (Just kidding) Truthfully…after the first shot rang out the buck made one more attempt to stand and fight once again. Fearful of an extended hunt beyond this point (as if not already long), “my sniper shooting buddy” put an extra round in him to make sure this adventure would indeed end right there.

3:30am-11:03am…memories and stories to last a lifetime. Thanks Bowtech08 for all of the help buddy.

Nice Buck! So it’s Ok to dispatch an archery-wounded deer with a firearm during archery season? Was this MLD property?
