used to call them spreadnouters when I was a kid. Don't see them very often

These were over by a bunch of sandhills. They'll actually burrow under the sand using that sharp nose. I find them quite a bit in that area. There's all sorts of kangaroo rats living over there so I reckon they probably are living off of baby kangaroo rats. They mainly eat toads but I can't imagine as dry as it is there's too many of those over there to chow down on.

It's funny you mention that because if you were to look I caught them almost exactly on the line where the Distribution range for the Eastern Hognose ends. It seems like I find more of those than I do the other. I rarely see any Western Hognoses.

My great grandma used to call em Spreadinattler. Never have heard anyone else call them that.

That's what I grew up knowing them as

I've heard them called "Hognose Viper" more than anything. And I think the people calling them that truely believe they're deadly.

Western Hognoses get killed a lot unfortunately because they do resemble a Prairie Rattlesnake or Western Massasauga which we have around here. Which is a shame because they really are harmless and timid. They put on a heck of a show but I think you'd really have to try to get bit by one.
