    Boar skull project

About a year ago I put a bolt through this young boar. Well my daughter and I found his bones about a week ago. I'd like to clean it up since it's in relatively good condition. The teeth and tusks are loose but other than that it's tip-top. Any suggestions on gluing/ caulking the teeth/tusk and bleaching would help. I've seen some great hog skulls on this forum.

    Thanks

I bought some caulking for the teeth, that should work I assume.

Glue all the teeth in after you bleach. You can just super glue them in

Should I put in 100% bleach or dilute with water?

Are you planning on putting it in your house? If so I would soak it in water for several days and then pull all the front teeth and cutters. There's a lot if tissue behind them that could start stinking.

Buy some 40% peroxide from a beauty supply store. It's like a paste. Cover every thing with the paste and wrap in foil, come back next day, wash, rinse, repeat until youve reached your desired whiteness.

Optionally, you can coat with polyurethane for a gloss finish.

First I would let it soak in water and dawn soap at about 120 degrees for a couple days or until all the grease has leached out changing the water as it gets cloudy. Then remove the teeth and whiten with 40% peroxide and whitening powder (is what I use) for about a day. Then rinse, let completely dry then glue teeth in with super glue

Degrease the skull first, or it will yellow. Simmer it (don’t boil) in water with Dawn or Borax. As for bleaching, use salon strength peroxide, 40 or 30%. You can also use regular peroxide, the key is wrapping the skull in cotton or something to keep the peroxide moist. Set it in sun, and baste the material until it is as white as you want it. Glue the teeth back in when done. Elmer’s works fine, or whatever you have on hand.

Glue the teeth in with regular old elmers white glue. Dries clear and wont degrade the bone like super glues can over time.

One more tip. After the tusks and whets are clean and dry fill them with elmers. That will keep them from cracking.

There are a lot of ways to clean that skull.
This one is the closest to my method.

Pigs and bear are the worst skulls, in terms of getting all the grease out. It could take a LONG time if the water is not heated to 120, like wilcox mentioned. Dawn and time, are your friends.

I use a stronger peroxide, though.

A fish aquarium heater can be used to keep your water warm.
