    Question for woodworking folks

I want to have my pedestal made from the cedar and/or oak thats on the ranch my axis was taken. I can surely provide big, straight logs from both or just one if someone on here knows how to or knows where to have someone "make" the pedestal. Here are my ideas in picture form but id like to add a small light setup of some sort to it. Anyone know how to turn my idea into a reality id appreciate the help!

Seems pretty simple. Hardest part is finding a good piece of wood!

Are you thinking like a small spot lot shining up on the axis?

There is a shop in McQueeney, TX on Hwy 725 just north of Hwy 78 that has ginormous piles of mesquite slabs, etc. I'm sure you can find something there--if you are traveling I-10 from Houston, it is exit 605 (?) the first one past the Guadalupe river bridge headed west, and then 4 miles or so north on 725 to 78, then right to the light, and left up 725 a block.

Awesome ill stop by the next time im heading to the ranch. I think i want a couple of small lights shining up towards him. The goal is to illuminate him as well as the corner of the room because where hes going is where our lamp is.

I have an unlimited amount of huge cedars on the ranch that i can use. We have to take quite a few out to clear land so id like to use one for the main pedestal. I just dont know what to do with the log once its cut lol.

I'd look for a dead tree that is still upright--with the bark all sloughed off for the upright part. Get a mesquite slab for the base. Attach the trunk to the base with lag-bolts from the bottom. Might have to cut the top at an angle to get it "right" but I don't think it will be a big deal. Your 2nd pic is what I'm seeing.

Here's one I made from a fallen cedar. Just cleaned the dirt from the roots and peeled the bark. Put several coats of linseed oil on it. The bottom isn't as dark as the pic it's just red like cedar gets. Click image for larger version

Ok about how big around should i look for? For the dead tree? I have someone wanting to sell me a mesquite slab for the base, id like to make that one the "fancy" part of it.

the problem you might have is getting a base thats heavy enough to support the weight of the mount.... my black buck pedestal has a block of concrete in the bottom of it
