    Dog itchy back?

What causes a dogs back to itch above tail? Both my dogs can't stop scratching and trying to bite their backs. It's not fleas. I didn't put drops on their backs. I don't get it. It's been going on for well over a month now so I assume not allergies either. But they concentrate right square on their lower back.

    Any ideas?

I had this same problem, first vet visit he said it was **** glands and expressed them and prescribed an antibiotic. It helped but came back so I learned to express the glands myself, not fun. Dog kept scratching and biting so returned to vet and he prescribed brovecta for fleas and ticks. He said the liquid flea medicine "frontline" that I was using wasn't penetrating to the skin with the type of coat/fur. She is an Akita mix breed. Keep in mind we bathed , bought special soaps, flea powder etc. I was convinced it was allergies or a skin condition.
Dog hasn't scratched since, fur has grown back and dog has never been happier. $46 and lasts 3 months.
Our German shepherd has never had this problem all we use on her is the liquid flea medicine.

Allergies. My lab fights with it all year. Summer is worse. We had to switch food to grain free. Coconut oil works on the area also

^^^^This. My beagle does the same thing. He also gets these big red sores on him due to allergies. He gets a shot every couple of months to keep him comfortable.

Allergies, our lab ended up being allergic to poultry. She is on a grain free and poultry free food now. She has stopped the itching and her shedding is a ton better.

My dog was doing the same thing about a month ago. I didn't think she had fleas either, but vet said she was allergic to flea bites, so he gave me some type of pill for her that kills fleas ticks and there larvae. I give it to her every 3 months. So doesn't itch anymore.

If only right at the base of the tail, almost fleas every time, even if you don't see them.

I've had clients swear on their family's life that their dog doesn't have fleas and with a quick little search you find flea poop in the area. Take a trip to your vet to get prescribed an oral flea and tick product and can also look for underlying problems.

Hate to say it but most likely fleas. Maybe switch flea meds.

Wash them with Selsun Blue shampoo. The medicated one with the red cap/label. My dog did that and a friend told me about it. Cleared him right up.
