Heartbreak as a parent. Lost a deer

My son got to be the hunter for the first time this weekend. He made what I thought was a decent shot on a doe this morning with his xbow. We gave her over an hour and began tracking. Unfortunately the trail dried up and we never found her. To see the tears in his eyes just broke my heart. It happens to all of us but to see my son have to go thru with it on his first deer tore me up. Hopefully we can shake it off and get on another one for him next weekend.

Not sure of any dog options in Breckenridge area. I thought about it. We had a couple goods spots of blood, rest was just drops. Didn't look like gut shot to me so I figured it would be a tough track. I thought high lung but he may had hit the void area. I'm not sure. Just sucks.

Hate to hear that and sucks to lose a deer period but specially your first. Theres plenty of good folks on here with some fine dogs that would be willing to help a kid with their first deer. If it happens again don't be afraid to ask for some help. Good luck to your boy on the next one!

One huge positive is that he showed a lot of disappointment and regret. I have seen hunters both young and old just shrug it off and go stick another one without feeling bad about it at all. It shows that he takes it seriously.

I lost my first deer too. It was a good setup but a poor shot. I found a blood trail that sounds identical to your boy's but no deer. Be glad you were there to counsel him. I was alone and didn't know what to do, ended up wandering around the woods in the dark for a few hours and finding nothing. Never a pleasant experience to lose an animal like that but you can't be perfect I guess.

I hope he gets back in the game soon.....pretty much anyone who hunts for any length of time is going to experience that....he just got it out of the way early.

He's almost 7. He's shot good during practice. Think I would rather lose a 160" deer myself than watch him have to go thru that again.

I agree completely. It says a lot about the young man and how he was raised.
Wishing him success on his next outing.
