Hadn't seen a thread on missing so figured I'd be the first
This is my first year bowhunting. I've been dreaming of opening weekend for months with ideas of bagging my two doe for the county and maybe even one of the big bucks I've seen on camera. I practiced every day, getting my shot's dialed in.
Opening day both my hunts were unsuccessful. In my ladder stand (20yrd shot to feeder) I was a little discouraged after my dog blew my morning hunt and my evening was interrupted by the neighbors having a live punk band play outside (they were actually pretty good haha).
This morning I woke up early still a little discouraged and decided to try my tripod stand on the other side of the property (30yrd shot to feeder) where I have seen the majority of the older bucks hanging around in the afternoons. I got in to the stand at 6am and by 7am there were 3 doe and two young bucks at the feeder.
After 20mins or so one of the older doe moved in at about 25yrds. I slowly lifted my bow and got into full draw and she turned. I held for a few seconds and then let off. I waited for her to turn to a good shooting position and she did. I got into full draw again and she moved again. I let off again after holding draw for what seemed like a eternity. This went on two more times.
Once again she turned just right, and this time I made a "mehh" sound to get her to stay still. I pulled back, set my anchors, put my pin where I wanted it....... and then I completely panicked. I'm not sue if it was the multiple draws that fatigued me, or if I just lost my composure but when I released the arrow I hit nothing but dirt about 1ft in front of her.
She jumped and high tailed it out of there and the rest of the group scattered. I felt like the biggest looser in the world. How could that have happened??? I waited about 30mins and came down from my stand and started the long walk of shame back home. During the walk I replayed the scene over and over in my head, but was so thankful that I had missed completely and did not wound her.
I'm still a little bummed out, but it's just the beginning of the season. I also have the luxury of hunting the property I live on so I can hunt after work and every weekend. What a rollercoaster of a season so far HAHAHA
I did want to ask should I hunt that stand again this afternoon, or give it a few days or weeks to cool back down??
Anybody else miss one yet?
