    shingles virus

went to an urgent care yesterday afternoon to get a painful rash on my back looked at. turns out I have a case of shingles. the nerve pain wraps around under my arm and onto my chest. he put me on some antiviral meds and some nerve pain meds to try and help this out. has anyone had experience with this virus and what time frame am I looking at before the rash and pain will go away? he did say once the blisters start to scab over its no longer contagious.

I was under the impression that shingles isn't contagious like the flu. Apparently if you have ever has the chicken pox then you are susceptible to have a shingles.outbreak at any time after a certaIn age like 40ish.
It can also happen on any part of your body. They say the worst is on the face and neck. Only with time.will It pass.

Good luck and hope you feel better soon.

I've had it several times. The old thought about getting it after 40 is bunk. I'm 33 and had my first round with it at 26. It is painful, I pity you. I always got it this time of year, Dr. Never could link the two, but mine would always show up right after a bout with poison ivy. Getting stands ready for season, I would get the poison ivy, then it would be shingles. I've been lucky the past 2 years and snuck out of the woods without either. As far as how long you have to deal with it. Sometimes it's fairly quick, sometimes it can take months. I actually had it one year that for the most part went away in a couple of weeks but would occasionally get the nerve pain for a year or better. It wasn't as bad, or constant, but was definitely there.

Yes I'm 27 and this is my first case of it. From what Dr. Said the chicken pox virus is what's inside the blisters.

That is true. I will tell you that they get VERY concerned if you get it repeatedly at a young age. I got it 6 years in a row, this time of year on every occasion. The last few times, you wouldn't believe the blood test I went thru. And they will ask you some pretty spooky questions. The last go round, I saw 8-10 DR's from regular docs to specialist, everyone of them first question was have you been tested for HIV? [emoji33]. I was sure I didn't have it, but every trip to bed in the last 15 years ran thru my head. I was tested for it like 5 times. Almost like they were convinced I had it. It was not a fun time.

Have you had the chicken pox vaccine?

Idk...i havent been to a dr since I was a kid. My parents tried to get me to catch it at the same time my sister and best friend had it when I was a kid. I just couldn't seem to get them for whatever reason.

I believe if you haven't had the chicken pox vaccine and you come into contact with the fluids from the shingles blisters then yes you can first get the chicken pox...shingles are in everyone who have had chicken pox, it just lays dormant. Some never have shingles. May I ask why they wanted you to catch shingles? Seems odd

I should have clarified...it was the chicken pox that they wanted me to get. The dr at the time that my sister went to recommended both of us getting it at the same time to get it over with. Back then it was considered inevitable to get them at some point in childhood. My dad never did get chicken pox either.

Im sorry, I did read your first comment incorrectly. Just seems odd that a Dr. Would intentionally try get someone to catch chicken pox!

Not odd at all in the old days.

To my knowledge and my Mom's i have never had any chicken pox, measles, mumps and I have been exposed many many times to all of them in the 55 yrs i have been on this rock.
I guess I am just very lucky

Our neighbor has been basically out of commission for a few months with shingles. From what her husband said it attacked the nerves in her neck and one side of her face. I've never known anyone who had it before but sounds pretty rough.
