I like buying really nice gear that will last me a lifetime and will do the job perfectly, but the vast majority of hunters (me included most of the time) can get the job done just as well with off the shelf stuff most of the time.

Nobody "needs" swarovski glass, FL clothing, a custom rifle, and kennetreks to shoot a WT in texas, but on a big time hunt those items can be life changing!
Same, but I generally buy all of my quality gear on sale or lightly used.

Im not loaded by any means but hunting and fishing are my 2 main hobbies, I dang sure will spend what I need to, to be as prepared and comfortable as possible with quality gear.

This thread is just asking to bring all the winder licker Yeti, Sitka, Kuiu, First Lite, etc haters to talk about how in their day they got by wearing blue jeans and flannel to hunt in and put their elk in an igloo cooler and how cheap ice is.

I'm a shopper too. I'll look around and wait for a deal if it's high end.

For the most part I'll spend money knowing it's going to last and possibly perform better.

Some stuff you just can't cheap on and not expect to be miserable

For me it depends on the gear, some stuff I dont buy the best when the middle of the road will work just fine for my needs. Other times, especially for important parts such as guns, scopes, outerwear etc I try to get the best quality I can afford.

For things that can last forever and get passed down...guns, binos, tools, etc....the best I can afford.

For things that will rip, tear, wear out, get tight in the midsection, become obsolete or just not get used....middle of the road.

As I get older never #3 anymore.

Hunting stuff I normally go #1 or 2. Always on sale or looking for a deal. Very rarely buy used.

                  I think I'm an outlier, but I don't have/use a whole lot of gear?

I guess if I need something I just look for the best value, which would fall somewhere in the middle?

Normally middle of the road for me, but I'm poor.

I do like having some higher end equipment and can't say for the most past it is usually is better and last longer.

I do go cheap on some stuff like tools for around the house. I see no reason to buy snap on, where harbor freight will work just as well for my application.

Typically I buy middle of the road/ cheap... when it breaks or I don't care for it anymore I will buy the nicer things... prefer to BOCO, but cant always afford to do so...

I have turned into a BOCO guy. I find something I want and have developed the patience to wait for a sale or discount to come up. Websites like Dvor and CamoFire are great for getting high end gear for much cheaper.

What do non outdoors-men spend their money on? I'd be a millionaire if I didn't hunt/fish.

Depends on the item. Some things I buy the best I can afford. Some ill rig up what I have that wasn't designed for that purpose just to get by because I'm not as passionate about it.
Hunting Texas I don't need high end clothing. Doesn't get cold enough. Under armour does everything I need. So do jeans most of the time.
I don't use cheap coolers anymore due to them breaking. I don't like sunglasses lower quality than Costa or Maui Jim.
I don't like combo fishing rod/reels off the shelf but don't buy the best either so middle of the road there.
Off road vehicles I'd rather walk than drop big money on a new one so I ride an old one.
                            Boots-i buy decent
Glass-ive gotten used to Zeiss and if it's a hunting scope I'm buying new will be zeiss, swaro etc. Plinking gun I don't care. On the other hand I bought a cva single shot on sale at academy for $100 and put an old redfield on it to ride around on 4 wheeler. So each item has it's place

I ask myself this all the time

I like to research the heck out of hunting stuff before I buy it and I'll pay for whatever item I think is a good value. I rather have once very nice whitetail rifle than 4 ok rifles. I rather have one great set of boots that will last multiple seasons and keep my feet dry than a cheap pair that I'll have to replace every year and so on and so on.

My dad could fill a barn with all the hunting stuff that he bought just because its was on sale. ha ha ha.

It really depends on what the item is and what it will be used for. Sometimes a cheap-o Harbor Freight tool is just fine.

That being said, I generally prefer to BOCO, and I love the the look and feel of good quality items.
