    coyote trapping

I was wondering if anyone had any good ideas on how to trap coyotes without catching the fawns or chasing off the deer.

I have been very successful in the past with foot traps, but I am afraid to catch a fawn. We have a ton of fawns this year. I also don't want to chase off the deer because we have a neighbor that just started hunting last year and they shoots everything that moves.

They are getting way too close to the goats and they need to be taught a lesson.

Get you a night vision and go have fun. You can put on supressed gun and all nice and quiet.

We pull our snares in March before the fawns drop. They will go back out around first of the year.

I trap pretty hard at the first of they year too, but a bunch have moved in over the past couple of weeks. I would like to do something now, without disrupting the deer.

Some people think this is too harsh, but we have used big treble hooks with meat on them. Use piano wire to hang from a branch. Tie them high enough that they have to jump to try and get it. I don't think it's any harsher than breaking their foot in a foot trap.

I was under the impression treble hooks were illegal, and as far as legholds go a properly swiveled trap shouldn't break the leg.

To the op get a licensed trapper to put out cyanide traps

If you put your sets right, you wont catch any fawns. Find a "trapper" to show you howwto make a proper baited set.

I was thinking of some sort of live trap. Maybe something a deer could jump out of and we could let a fawn out of.

I don't know if I really want to attract them, I just want to catch them if they get too close. I know that really doesn't work well.

I have been very successful with my baited traps in the past, but they will spook the deer.

I am not sure if the cyanide is a good idea. We have livestock and I run them with my dogs.

This^^^. I've never caught a fawn. This time of year I will have my sets slightly under a log or brush where the yote will have to paw at the bait. A fawn can't just walk right into it.

In the past I have always used a flat set with dog droppings as bait. It was always set off of a trail a couple of feet. I have seen deer step in them. Mine usually have a clear path to them and grass around them. Deer don't really care and can step on them. I guess if I set mine where they were protected by brush or a log it should keep deer off of it. It probably wouldn't be normal to use dog droppings under a log so I might have to change my bait.

I did a hole trap twice and caught rabbits both times. The coyotes ate the rabbits before I got there.

If deer can jump out, a coyote will climb out, I guarantee.

I'm almost positive it is ILLEGAL. It's not listed under legal means in the furbearing handbook. Then again it's not under prohibited means either but I dang sure don't want to get fined.

I have heard this works. I have heard pieces of raw chicken are the meat to use. I am going to try it, I am going to run these sets every day, so I don't think they will be any harsher than any other means
