    Hiking/ snake boots

I'm looking for a good pair of snake boots that are also hiking boots. I'm going on the Archery hunt at Matador and I heard snakes are everywhere and I will also need to cover some ground. My snake boots now are more of a cowboy boot which are fine for around the lease but I need something that I can walk all day in. My buddy runs a red wing store and I can get them for half off and I was looking at the vaportrek 17" snake boot. I have the regular vaportrek and they are really comfortable. Anyone have any experience with these or other recommendations?

Snake protection in a lightweight boot with incredible stability and comfort. This Realtree Xtra® Green camouflage hunting boot is also waterproof. Shop now at Irish Setter!

Let me know how they work out, I have some light weight danner snake boots and I put in 8 miles, never again, not worth the ankle pain, my new plan is to probably pack my snake boots on my pack and put them on once I hit the creek, hopefully all the deer within two miles won't smell me when I do that, on second thought I'll do it a half mile before the creek! But I'm not interested in sneaking around moccasinville in the dark without them.

I'm hoping these are as comfortable as the regular one that I have, I love those.

You might also consider getting some good hiking boots and then a pair of snake guard gators. That would probably be the best of both worlds - comfortable hiking boots plus snake protection.

When is your hunt though? If it's a rifle hunt later in the fall, it may be cool enough where you don't have to worry as much about snakes.

I thought about that, I'm going on the Archery hunt October 16-18. I have never worn gators and was worried they would slip up and down and don't want to deal with that. Do you have any experience with any brand? These are just like the hiking boots I would be wearing and if I can get them for half price.

I've never worn the gators. I have some snake boots that are comfortable, but I wouldn't want to hike and climb the canyons all day in them. I've hunted the Matador a few times - October, November, March.... I've always just worn my hiking boots. I grew up in the Panhandle hunting the canyons. Snakes are there, but not any worse than most other parts of the state. I just pay attention to where I'm stepping. Never stepped on one yet. Knock on wood!

Maybe it's a lot of city folks freaking out 'cause they saw a couple snakes while they were there? I don't remember seeing a snake of any kind on any of the hunts I've been on at the Matador, actually. I'm sure if I went around looking under all the rocks and in all the holes I'd find lots of them, but they weren't crawling all over the place trying to attack me or anything.

Chippewas are plenty comfortable. I hiked 35+ miles in mine in three days at the Devils River SNA exotic hunt a couple years ago with no issues.

Well let's say worst case scenario happens, how far from an emergency room am I? I'm willing to chance it, lol

Check out the Irish Setter snake boots. Made by Redwing. Very comfortable.

I have snake guards that I put on over my jeans and wear hiking boots. I've got a bad ankle and need the extra support a hiking boot provides. I've got the scentblocker snake guards from cabelas, and they have a stirrup type strap that goes under your boot so that they don't ride up. I like them.

It has been a few years, but I have been all over the Matador Wildlife Refuge and never seen a snake. Not saying they are not there, but at 26,000 acres, you better find a comfortable pair of boots and a good 4x4 if you plan on driving the west road along the west boundary fence. Awesome sand that sucks in heavy rigs and blows out hubs!

Absolute fun place to hunt and some monster pigs, whitetails and muleys! Good luck!

Speaking of 4x4, we are going to be pulling my buddies trailer with his new f 350 that is 4x4 but I was thinking we might want to take my tundra instead to get get around out there. It is a 4x4 as well. What are your thoughts?
