Carpet to Concrete Transition/Seam

Is it possible to go from carpet to concrete flooring without one of those tacky metal strips? I have carpet throughout the house now, but am wanting to pull it up and go stained concrete in the common areas.

"Z" bar. Carpet tucks in and under the strip. Nothing showing but rolled over carpet.

If your house is like most that were not built with stained concrete planned you may be in for a surprise when you pull up the carpet.
