    Restoring Military Items

First of all, my heart goes out to all of the storm victims, and I hope everyone on here is getting what they need to recover.

I'm hoping some of the veterans on here can help me out. My parents had almost 6 feet of water in their house, and I'm looking for a way to restore some of the things my dad treasures. He retired from the Air Force as a Major in 1991. His Mess Dress and Dress Blues both got wet, along with his medals and ribbons. They're already starting to mold. Is there a company that specializes in cleaning these items?

Also, and this ones tough, as it's one of the few things that I've seen bring him to tears. Those of you who put in your 20 years know about the certificate that he received when he retired. That got wet and damaged. I don't yet know how bad it is. My mom is going to get me a picture. Is there any way to get that replaced, or a company that can restore it? I'd like to get these things to people that specialize in military items. Any help you can provide would be very appreciated. Thank you.

Looks like we'll be able to save his retirement certificate. We just need to find someone who does document restoration. It definitely can't be replaced, because it has his CO's signature on it.

I'm not familiar with AF stuff. What's the badge on the left breast pocket represent?

That is the TAC Master Missile Operator Badge. He was pretty high up in the Minuteman and Peacekeeper missile program.

I get the missle part, but "TAC"? Apologies as I was just a lowly mud rolling 0311 grunt.

Actually, I made a mistake. He was SAC (Strategic Air Command). Fighters were under TAC, and the third was MAC (Military Airlift Command).

Belfor does restoration. I know that when New York got flooded a few years back they were the company tasked with restoration of bearer bonds estimated to have been in the billions of dollars of value. I was tasked along with my team and other teams like mine with guarding the bonds while they were on site. Those folks have some skills. I'm sure they're super busy right now with all of this and don't know if they take on smaller jobs like this, but it's worth reaching out to them. In the mean time, put that stuff in a freezer so that they stop deterioration until you can find someone.

Thank you! I will contact them, and get the garments in the freezer tomorrow. They're locked up at the house still, and my parents are staying with friends.
